"Modular Structures for Cell Models"

We explain with a series of examples how various biological processes within a microbe are under the influence of the macroeconomics of the host (growth rate, size of the ribosomal pool, ATP levels, DNA levels, etc); we review a certain number of existing simple macroeconomic models from the literature; we show how these models can in principle be paired with traditional systems biology models of a process of interest (either natural and synthetic) and in so doing one can account for the mutual dependencies between host and process. Time permitting, we speculate on various designs for engineering the interaction between hosts and synthetic biology constructs; and, we show and discuss a prototype platform for modelling this interaction.

"A mechanistic model of cellular growth"

We developed a mechanistic model that connects nutrient uptake, gene expression and cellular growth. At the core of it are the costs and benefits of biosynthetic and metabolic reactions in terms of their energy consumption and yield, transcriptional regulation, and competitive binding of mRNAs to ribosomes for translation. The model provides a mechanistic explanation for the empirical laws of bacterial growth, and it identifies mechanisms that are common to bacteria and eukaryotes as key modulators of cellular growth. In this talk, I will present the essential parts of the model and discuss potential applications.
