China is a priority country for Wageningen University & Research. Because China is such an important country for Wageningen University & Research it was decided in 2012, that besides having a Wageningen University & Research office in Beijing, to appoint a dedicated account manager for China: Xiaoyong Zhang. Chinese students, both MSc and PhD, make up 10% of the Wageningen students population and the trend is set to contiue increasingly.

In 2012 the first steps were made towards the engagement of the private sector in China. Wageningen University & entered cooperation agreements with leading organizations in strategic regions, for example: COFCO Group, Yili Group, Weiming Group and Shandong Shouguang Vegetable Industrial Group (SVIG).

Wageningen University & Research also has close ties with important Chinese academic organisations: Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS), China Agricultural University (CAU), Nanjing Agricultural University (NAU) and Tsinghua University. The collaboration with the CAAS will focus on the initiative of the Global Alliance on Food Security Research.
