When manure from the dairy industry is stored, it releases the strong greenhouse gas methane that gets into the atmosphere. Wageningen Livestock Research is conducting an unusual trial to reduce these emissions.

Experimenting for the climate

The Netherlands aims to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 49 per cent by 2030, compared with 1990. How we are going to do that is to be laid down in a Climate Agreement. Numerous experiments in emission reduction are already under way.

Burning the methane

Researchers of Wageningen Livestock Research coordinate the different climate pilots in the livestock sector. Like this trial with burning the methane.

We want to establish whether they work, how much they cost and what they deliver in the way of CO2 reduction.
