Are you a motivated student looking for an exciting course? The Agricultural Economics and Rural Policy Group (AEP) is launching a brand new course Life Science Economics and Policies (AEP-52806) in period 2 of 2017/18 (October-December, 2017) at Wageningen University & Research for Master/PhD students.

The course integrates economics and policy with the life sciences and discusses the economics and policies of life sciences covering the whole value chain from R&D, over application, processing, retailing and final demand and how the value chain and the rents and their distribution along the chain are affected by policies. Examples such as the benefits and costs of developing, cultivating, and marketing genetically modified organisms (GMOs) will be discussed.
Students acquire knowledge and competencies to work on societal challenges within the bio-economy like food security, regulations, climate change, environmental degradation, and the growing demand for energy, food and raw materials. These issues require innovative solutions with appropriate regulatory frameworks and policies.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:

  • recall and explain the economic issues and policies affecting the life science sector at EU and international level;
  • apply economic methods to assess benefits and costs of policies affecting the life science sector;
  • analyse and evaluate the economics and policies of new products in the life sciences;
  • create ex-ante economic assessments of new products in the life sciences.

What we offer?

We will try our best to make the course appealing and interactive. We provide continuous guidance and assistance to students to help them gain the maximum from the course. As a new course, students also help in shaping the course and the depth of the discussion may change based on students’ preferences.
