With a share of 5% of the Dutch economy, livestock farming is important, but the scale and intensity of this type of farming in Netherlands is regularly criticised by citizens and professionals. Wageningen University & Research works together with the industry not only to provide solutions, but also to offer new perspectives.
Animal husbandry also has a strong international dimension. Integrated stable systems that respond to the animals needs in terms of behaviour and living conditions without losing sight of factors such as economy, environment, human and animal health and working conditions are needed. Specific aspects such as animal welfare, greenhouse gas emissions and zoonotic diseases (infectious diseases transmitted from animals to humans) are also given much attention.
