A transition is a societal process of change that takes place over many years. Transitions are the result of trends and developments in economy, culture, institutions, technology, nature and environment, that influence and mutually enhance each other. A number of related system innovations play a part in steering transitions towards a sustainable society. System innovation is a relatively complex form of innovation and can only be successful in large conglomerates and with the cooperation of all stakeholders. Research into Transition and System Innovation is carried out in a number of departments at Wageningen UR. Examples are protein transition or the transition to a Biobased Economy. Other system innovations include those involving sustainable animal husbandry, sustainable plant production chains and the green environment.
