This project will study the morphodynamics of a sandy foreshore, the development of vegetation, and the additional contribution of the vegetation towards the stability of the sandy foreshore.
The Ecoshape consortium together with Rijkswaterstaat Corporate Innovation initiated plans for a sandy (soft) foreshore along the Houtribdijk, instead of traditional dike construction. This Building with Nature design includes a sandy foreshore, constructed with a shallow, vegetated slope. An extensive monitoring program will study the morphodynamics of the foreshore, the development of vegetation, and the additional contribution of the vegetation towards the stability of the sandy foreshore. With vegetation, the slope of the foreshore can be steeper than without, which results in cheaper construction.
The outcomes of this pilot will provide knowledge on the applicability of hybrid solutions, both in terms of safety regulations, and for additional nature values. This can be applied to other systems, both in the Netherlands as in other Delta regions.
Available ecological knowledge on different types of vegetation will be used in describing and modelling the ecohydrodynamics of a soft hybrid dike.
