Separating nanoparticles with FFF

Nanotechnology offers opportunities for new products and product improvement but the safety of nanomaterials in food is sometimes questioned. Therefore it is important to have methods to assess the security risks and to check whether nanoparticles are really present in products.

There exists a method to determine this and this method uses Hydrodynamic Chromatography (HDC), but this method is limited and the only provider of HDC columns has announced that they will stop the production. The aim of this project is to set up and test the new FFF instrument (asymmetric flow field flow fractionation-AF4) that replaces HDC.
