Synthetic Biology

Synthetic biology, reprogramming of biological systems, plays an increasingly important role in societal challenges in the fields of agriculture and food. Using novel gene editing techniques plant varieties and animal populations can be modified in a fast and accurate manner expanding their diversity within and between species.

Commercial applications in food and feed such as efficient production of various compounds are now possible. Within this project the potential of synthetic biology is tested in practice. Simultaneously, food and environmental safety aspects will be analysed. When being aware of potential risks to health and the environment during the development stage of a product it is possible to formulate a framework for responsible introduction of derivative products. Insights will contribute to appropriate risk assessment strategies and evaluation of current strategies with the aim to ensure safety for both engineers and consumers of novel food products.
