Project

Analytical methods to determine the safety and quality of agricultural product

In the context of food safety, international trade and the harmonization of legislation in Europe, harmonized analytical methods are important for the mutual recognition of analysis results and fair trade.

To determine the safety and quality of agricultural products, reliable and internationally accepted methods of analysis are of vital importance. European legislation often refers to harmonized standards. Moreover, in criminal investigations it is of great importance that harmonized analytical methods are available.

Another aim of this project is to advice the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture and Innovation on, for example, the translation of EFSA opinions to maximum levels for e.g. contaminants in feed, usefulness and interpretation of harmonized analytical methods, the feasibility of maximum levels from recent analytical results obtained, and analytical possiblities to enforce new maximum levels in legislation.

Approach

  • Chairmanship of the CEN committee for feedingstuffs, CEN/TC 327.
  • Active contributions in European harmonization of methods of analysis in CEN/TC 327.
  • Advise of the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, Agriculture about establishment or modification of maximum levels of e.g. contaminants in legislation.

Results

CEN standards for methods of analysis for e.g. contaminants, undesirable substances, additives in feed and feed materials
