Selection of students and projects for Academic Consultancy Training

Wageningen University & Research offers study programmes within a wide range of subjects. Overall, students from 21 different Master's programmes take part in the Academic Consultancy Training (ACT).

Firstly, the Education Project Services checks whether the tasks given by the commissioner are suitable for the students of Wageningen University, are formulated at an university level and whether the project matches the learning objectives of the course and the expertise’s of the students.

Also, we will give you an overview of how the formation of a student team takes place, and the selection procedure of the projects:

Expertise of the students

  • Students from 21 different Master's programmes participate in ACT.
  • It can vary per academic period which students are following the ACT course, and subsequently which expertise they have.
  • It is desirable to submit the project in English because many international students participate in this course. The teams will consist of Dutch and international students.

These 21 Master's programmes are all Masters within the ‘green’ domain Food and Living environment. In this domain, three partly overlapping and coherent core areas are distinguished: ‘Society and well-being’, ‘Food, feed and biobased production’ and ‘Natural resources and living environment’.

Examples of the Master's programmes which participate in the ACT course are:

  • Society and well-being: the Master’s programmes ‘Communication, Health and Life Sciences’ and ‘Management, Economics and Consumer studies’.
  • Food, feed and biobased production: the Master’s programmes ‘Agricultural and Bio-resource engineering’ and ‘Nutrition and Health’.
  • Natural resources and living environment: the Master’s programmes ‘Climate studies’ and ‘Forestry and Nature Conservation’.

Selection procedure students

  • In consultation with the commissioner, it is decided which expertise’s are required. Further wishes (language, nationality, interests) to carry out the assignment are also discussed. These wishes could be added to the assignment.
  • All selected projects for ACT will be presented to our students via an internal portal. Based on the assignment descriptions, students indicate a first, second and third choice for the various projects. Thereby, the students also indicate how their disciplinary knowledge contributes to the project.
  • Afterwards students write an application letter and send their curriculum vitae to the coordinators of the course. The coordinators form the teams based on the required disciplinary mix and interest of the students. As a commissioner, you have no influence on the selection procedure and the composition of the team. Of course, the wishes and preferences concerning the expertise’s of the students are included.

Selection procedure projects

  • It can vary per period which students follow the ACT course. This means that the expertise of the students can vary per period. Depending on the number of enrolled students and their expertise, it is determined in which academic period the execution of the project is most convenient. The ACT-coordination team contacts the client as soon as it has been decided that a project has been selected for execution. You will then receive further information about the schedule of the course. If your project has not been selected, you also will be contacted as soon as possible.
  • If your project has not been selected, you will be asked whether you want to submit the assignment again in a later period or whether the assignment can be offered to students via another course or another type of learning format. You can read more about this here.
  • If the project has been selected and is scheduled to be carried out, the students will have around 220 hours available per person in a period of eight weeks. This adds up to approximately 1000-1500 hours of working time per student team.
