Breeding of polled cattle

In order to stop structural dehorning different breeding programs will be examined. The primary focus is on inbreeding and robustness.

The ability to breed hornless cattle is already known, but in practice it’s not often used. With the increasing concern about interventions in livestock farming, there is a need to explore alternatives for structural dehorning. Adaptation through breeding and selection is a serious possibility in the current livestock systems to reduce the negative welfare effects of dehorning. Research conducted in 2008 showed that there are technical possibilities for this and that there is sufficient public support. The goal of this project is to design a breeding program for hornless cattle with attention to inbreeding and robustness.
