Looking back at 100 years WUR

The jubilee programme is composed based on ideas of employees, students and others involved. This resulted in a widely varied programme, divided over the themes Life, Food and Earth. See below for a look back on the various activities, divided over five categories.

100 years of education
Education is one of the two pillars of Wageningen University & Research. This is why 100 years of education was given a prominent role during our anniversary. During this celebratory year, different types of events related to education were organised.
Symposia and conferences
The focus of the anniversary year was the 100 years of research and education from Wageningen University & Research. We are at the top internationally and that makes us proud. We organised symposia, lunch lectures, workshops, and discussions on the three central themes of life, food, and earth.
UniversiTREE
100 trees for 100 years Wageningen University & Research was an idea from a Wageningen alumnus. Through the 100x100 campagne donations were received. Trees are planted worldwide to create a forest of UniversiTREES. The forest symbolically represents the international connection to Wageningen. The tree chosen is always a slow-growing species which can live to be very old and which fits into the specific environment. The UniversiTREES will collectively form a lasting reminder of 100 years WUR.
Art, culture, and science
Conceptualise, experiment, reflect, wonder, and inspire: art and science have a lot in common. However, it is even more exciting when they come together. In the context of 100 years of Wageningen University & Research, artists, scientists, musicians, and actors made connections or challenged each other in different projects. Several creative outcomes from these encounters have taken shape on and around campus. Get inspired by the stories, photographs and videos.
Books and films
Aside from the events to celebrate the 100-year anniversary of WUR, several documentaries, videos, and books were created and shown. The book Metamorfose (Metamorphosis) is the fourth and last part in the series about 100 years of WUR.
Vips visit WUR
During the events of the anniversary year, we regularly received high-profile visitors on campus, who had come to learn about and contribute to the developments taking place throughout Wageningen University & Research. Below we highlight these guests and include the event that they attended.
WUR and its relationship with society
For over a century, students and employees have been leaving their mark on campus and in the city. They live, shop, eat, drink, celebrate, work, and study here. The university and the city have become intertwined in the past 100 years. To focus on this special bond, several activities were organised to celebrate, emphasise, and reinforce it.
Impact of WUR on business
During the 100-year anniversary, ample attention was also given to one of the most important stakeholders of WUR, namely the business community. WUR works with and for the business community, regionally, nationally, and globally. The combination of the correct knowledge and resources can lead to the realisation of concrete solutions to major issues. Through efforts such as organising a company day, current connections were strengthened and new relationships were built.

Alumni events
Wageningen University & Research has over 45,000 alumni. One of the characteristics of our former students is that many have spread their wings and now left their mark around the world. We devoted our attention to this during our anniversary year and celebrated our centennial together with them. It was not only the 2100 alumni who came together in Wageningen on 23 June. Gatherings were organised by and for alumni in many other locations around the world.
World Wide Wageningen Alumni Reunion
Saturday 23 June 2018 WUR celebrated its 100th anniversary with the World Wide Wageningen Alumni Reunion. All over the world, alumni met with each other to recollect memories and exchange experiences. We are still very proud of the official opening of the alumniday by His Majesty King Willem-Alexander on Wageningen Campus. The alumniday was from 13.00 to 21.00 hrs.
Festivals and parties
Every birthday calls for a party. That is why the anniversary year started off with a fantastic opening event. It was followed by more festivals on campus and in the city, and topped off by the WUR 100fest, which attracted over 8000 colleagues and students! Look back on these fun and memorable moments we celebrated together.
Sport and challenges
With a large sport complex like the Bongerd and 29 student sport associations, WUR can be described as a sportive organisation. Therefore, the jubilee programme could not lack sports and challenges. The Great National Student Championships (GNSC) took place in Wageningen this year and in September a few hundred employees and students got on their bikes to cycle 40.000 km (a circle around the Earth) with the WUR on Wheels challenge.
