Integrity and Social Safety

How do we treat one another and the outside world? This is the central question relating to (scientific) integrity and social safety at Wageningen University & Research.

Integrity in general

Generally speaking, integrity demands that all employees and students behave with integrity when teaching, doing research and providing (social) services. The Integrity Code of Wageningen University & Research and the current Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity together form the most important guidelines for acting with integrity on the part of employees and, more specifically, scientists at Wageningen University & Research.

In addition, WUR has drawn up an anti-corruption code for personnel involved in international projects. This code provides rules for doing business in a fair and ethical manner with countries that have a low corruption index (CPI), or with which no business can be done based on UN sanctions policy.

In addition to these codes, there are a number of specific regulations, agreements and complaint procedures to safeguard integrity. All our employees act in full accordance with these mandatory rules of conduct and hold each other accountable.

All employees and students of Wageningen University & Research must comply with the Integrity Code of Wageningen University & Research and its principles for acting with integrity: Scrupulous, Reliable, Independent, Socially Responsible and Inspiring and safe working environment. The Regulations Ancillary Activities applies to ancillary activities. It is important that both the internal organisation and potential clients have insight into work for third parties. This prevents (the suggestion of) a conflict of interests. This means that all employees must ask prior written permission to perform ancillary activities. And it is especially important for scientists (including professors) that they publish their work for third parties in accordance with the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity on the profile pages of the website of Wageningen University & Research (see also text below).

In their employment contract new employees sign the Integrity Code Wageningen University & Research, the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity, the network regulations and they list their work for third parties. Wageningen University & Research follows regulations used in complaint procedures regarding abuse, such as the Whistleblower’s Regulations and the Complaints procedure undesirable behaviour and it offers help and support in dealing with improper behaviour.

Scientific Integrity

With regard to scientific integrity, WUR acts in accordance with the Netherlands Code of Conduct for Research Integrity is applicable. This Code is based on the following, widely supported principles namely: honesty, scrupulousness, transparency, independence and responsibility. Acting with integrity is the main pillar of good scientific practice and is an essential prerequisite for creating trust in and maintaining the credibility of science.

Social Safety

Social safety is the highest priority at WUR. We look out for each other to create a pleasant and safe environment to work and study at WUR. Together, we stand for a positive work and study climate where we treat each other with respect, and employees and students feel safe to develop their talents to the full. It is thus essential that we can call each other to account and point out if things are not going well. And that you can get help and advice about this.

Privacy and Personal Data

Wageningen University & Research has a duty of care concerning private data that it (temporarily) possesses on its staff, students and others.

The principles of proper governance are set out in the Code for Good Governance WUR. This code applies to both Wageningen University and Wageningen Research.
