Capita: Perceptions of nature in different cultural contexts - Matthijs Schouten

The way in which nature is perceived varies between cultures. As a result there are cultural differences in the view on the relationship between humans and nature. The lectures will discuss the image of nature in tribal civilizations, in Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Judaism and Islam. Furthermore the perception of nature in the history of (Christian) Western civilization will be addressed. The subject will be approached from the perspectives of philosophy, theology , arts and sciences. Attendance at lectures and the writing of an essay provide 2 study points.

• 24 January:   Buddhism and Taoism
• 31 January:   Judaism
• 21 February: Islam
• 28 February: Classical period and (Western) Middle Ages
• 07 March:     Renaissance and Modern Period.
