Why is it so difficult to combat climate change? It seems hard to understand how climate change, as such a serious threat to human well-being has become such a problem. If we can agree about the problem, why not on the solutions? Can we govern it by rules and regulations or should we hope for technological solutions? Is it a political problem of unequal distribution of cost and benefits between for example developed and developing countries? Or of high costs on short term of which we will know the benefits only on the long term? And who takes the benefits and who pays the costs?
Series: The Future of Our Climate
Climate change has already changed the planet in an irreversible way and continues to do so. And all countries agreed during the latest climate summit in Copenhagen they really want to stay below a warming of two degrees. But it seems we are not heading towards the fulfillment of this goal in any way. With the current practices, the world is likely to come to a global warming of in between four and six degrees till the end of the century. What are the risks and challenges that come along with this development? What exactly are the scenarios we face, what are our choices? How can we make our choices become reality?
