Application of novel distributed rainfall-runoff model Itzï for automated flood risk mapping with global applicability – two case studies on Mindanao island, Philippines
Flash floods are posing an increasing threat to the expanding anthropogenic parts of the world. In particular, areas where the natural landscape has been strongly modified, such as urban areas or intensive monoculture, hydrological extremes ask for suitable and adequate models to guide mitigation strategies. A tool has been developed for automatic flood risk mapping in tropical fruit plantations as a project by remote sensing company EagleSensing. This combines high-resolution airborne optical imagery with public climate and spatial data of quasi-global (tropical) coverage, which are processed by a hydrological model to simulate overland flow. The novel 2-D numerical distributed rainfall-runoff model Itzï was applied in two basins on the Mindanao island of the Philippines while model performance and suitability for the project were evaluated. Given the extreme data limitations resulting from the required extent of applicability and automation, Itzï proved to be a proper model in this project. However, validation options were limited by data availability, and further improvement of the topography data is expected to favour model simulations.
