About lecture series Religious Nationalism

How does religion play a role in fostering nationalism? A two-pronged series where different cases are under the spotlight.

Comparing Religious Nationalisms

What is religious nationalism? In a tour of diverse cases ranging from India, the USA, France and Nigeria to The Netherlands among others, Dr. Markha Valenta, (RU) compares rich varieties of religious nationalism and how they relate to secularism. Does the degree to which religious symbols, practices and identities shape nationalism really matter? She explores the ways religion and its political influence have changed in modern democracies. And what can then be said about nationalisms’ impact on religion? Find out what feeds the persistence and return of religious nationalism on different continents and what this could mean for the future.

About Dr. Markha Valenta

Dr. Markha Valenta is Assistant Professor in the Institute for Historical, Literary and Cultural Studies at Radboud University. She works to develop an understanding of how global politics shapes democratic societies with regard to questions of religion, race, citizenship, and belonging. Her interest in religious nationalism centers on the ways in which religion and democracy disrupt and stimulate each other at the same time. Her method of research has involved extensive case studies which are problem-driven, comparative and interdisciplinary (drawing on anthropology, political philosophy, postcolonial history, religion-, gender- and queer studies).
