About Discovering Worlds: How Films Let Us Wander
Movies are worlds where people, stories and ideas come to life and find their place, literally and figuratively. Movie reviewer Kevin Toma and philosopher Sabine Winters introduce us to a wide variety of those worlds. Showing scenes from different movies, they take us on a tour with the work of philosopher Peter Sloterdijk as a starting point. In his book Spheres (1998) he calls people ‘place makers’, creating meaningful spaces where we can relate to people and objects. Is watching a movie a way of ‘place making’? How can you travel through a movie and feel at home there? Can we live in movies?
But don’t expect a guided tour. Important this evening is the interaction with you, the public. So come and discover how you can find your place in a movie.
About Kevin Toma
Kevin Toma (Sittard, 1974) studied Film- and Performance-Studies at Radboud University Nijmegen. He started his career as movie reviewer for De Filmkrant. Starting 2007 he works as a movie reviewer for De Volkskrant.
Furthermore he composes modern music for, and accompanies silent movies. He wrote new scores for and accompanied live among others Sunrise (1927), Häxan (1922) and Berlin, die Sinfonie der Groβstadt (1927).
About Sabine Winters
Sabine Winters (1983, Arnhem) is a freelance philosopher, with a specialisation in philosophy of science. She is the founder of the interdisciplinary philosophy platform Future Based, where she and her team work on podcasts, articles, reading groups and meetups. Furthermore, Sabine is curator and programmer for Oddstream, a technology and art platform of Nijmegen.
