Social Media Café: Altmetrics

Metrics, like the h-index and quartiles of journal impact factors, play an important role in research evaluation, and therefore in the professional life of researchers. The present system is based on citation counts. It is sometimes criticised. For one thing publications need time to get cited, and that makes the system a bit slow. Furthermore it does not taken into account more modern forms of scholarly communication than the traditional journal.

Is there an alternative? The Altmetrics movement was started to create a different way to measure the life and use of scientific publications. A number of companies have created systems that can provide other metrics like number of downloads, blogs, tweets, Mendeley reads for individual articles, authors or institutions.

But what meaning can we read into for example the number of tweets about a scientific article? At this Social media cafe we will explain Altmetrics and show a number of the systems, and discuss whether they can be used to demonstrate scientific or societal impact.
