Speaking with ease

"I’ll forget what I want to say… My stomach is queasy, my palms are sweaty...The audience will be bored...Everyone will see my knees and hands shaking...My mind will be blank about the opening lines... My voice will wobble...I’ll get asked loads of questions that I don’t know the answer to...I’ll start waffling and lose track of what I wanted to say...”

While we can all feel nervous for public speaking to a more or lesser extent, we do not really train in dealing with this stress and discomfort and we don't learn how we can decrease the influence it has on our presentation skills. Isn't that silly? Time to make a change! In this workshop (a series of 4 sessions), you will learn strategies for staying calm and feeling better when presenting to an audience, and improve your presentation skills. Topics: preparation, structure, non-verbal communication, voice and interaction with audience. The tips and exercises will make you better prepared for presenting your ideas!

Group size: max 10 students
Course duration: 4 sessions of 3 hours
Self Study: 8 hours

Workshop 1. Dealing with nerves - theory and practice - Online This session an array of exercises and tips are presented to help prevent and decrease nervousness, during your preparation. By looking at nerves from a biological, physical and psychological perspective, and by doing some simple presentation exercises, you can find out what works best for you.

Workshop 2. Structure - Live
In this session we look at how effective presentations are structured. When you apply this structure to your own presentation, it will help you to not lose track and appear more confident and relaxed. Preparation: 5 min presentation.

Workshop 3. Non-verbal Communication - Online
In this session we address how your body language can counter feelings of nervousness, and we practice how you can use your non-verbal communication (posture, voice, gestures) to make your message come across clearly. Preparation: 5 min presentation.

Workshop 4 Voice and interaction - Live
In this session we will investigate how we can use our voice to match what you say and how you say it. If this is congruent, you and your audience will feel more at ease. Next, you learn how to engage the audience in your presentation and how to deal with questions in a confident way. Preparation: 5 min presentation.
