Stories around the world

GAIA plateau (A130), 12:45-13:45 - Wageningen is situated near a river, like most old towns. Rivers have been our highways, as well as our borders. So have seas. The Dutch, like other people, sailed far and wide. And the water has brought us prosperity. At the same time, water is a threat. Rivers and seas take lives every year. We build dikes and seawalls, but we know we are never safe. We build strong ships, but not even the Titanic is unsinkable. Swamps and wells can harbour dangerous things. No wonder there are so many stories about water.
I will tell you some of those stories. Some stories will be typically Dutch, others will be from farther away. All will show something of our fascination with water.
