Crimea is in Russian hands. The Ukraine has been overwhelmed by internal turmoil. Along Europe’s eastern frontier, former Soviet states are wary of their economic, political, ethnic and cultural allegiances – to the east and west. Studium Generale invites you to gain a better understanding of what these developments will mean for the future.

Prof. Duco Hellema (Dept. History of International Relations, Utrecht University) reviews the Ukrainian upheaval and explores its meaning. He walks us through idealist/constructivist and realist perspectives to understand Russia’s manoeuvring throughout the crisis. Is this historical revenge? Is a ‘Big Russia’ realistic? What are ‘spheres of influence’ and how have they played a role in the crisis in the Ukraine?
