Theme: Big Data
“In technology circles, there is an aphorism when it comes to talking about Big Data: if the pile of manure is large enough, you eventually will find a golden coin. In other words, if you research enough data, you will always find something interesting” (Translated, originally from Dimitri Takmetris in Dutch). Although there is no widely spread definition for ‘big data’, the subject is becoming more and more relevant. Digital technologies offer new opportunities to investigate and resolve difficult issues in society and economy. At the same time, the digital age raises new questions: on the possibility to involve citizens in science; on privacy and the surveillance of people; on the power balance between big institutions and individuals; and on whether the digital era develops new frontiers in exploring the potential of nature and in designing new practices and technologies for a better quality of life.

Prof. dr. R.G.F. (Richard) Visser Chair & head Wageningen UR Plant Breeding. His expertises are Biotechnology, Genetics, Molecular Breeding, Plant Breeding.
Next to his work as a scientist he is also involved in a couple of side activities. He is a.o. a board member of stichting Veenhuizen-Tulp fonds, a board member of Stichting Preduza and scientific advisor at MT Solynta.

Laxmi is leading the Computational Genomics Group in the Computational Biology Center at the IBM T, J. Watson and a visiting professor at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York. She received her Ph.D. in the area of Computational Genomics from New York University in 1998 and received the Janet Fabri Award for an outstanding thesis in computer science. She is also a recipient of the Sandra Belestein award for notable achievement in mathematical and computer science by a woman. She has authored over hundred research papers, and holds several patents related to her algorithmic work.
Her professional activities include organizing/chairing leading conferences in the area of computational biology and computer science; advisory board membership of computer science departments; evaluation panels of NIH/NSF bodies, amongst others. Her research has focused on algorithmics and statistics in the area of computational genomics. Her research monograph “Pattern discovery in Bioinformatics: Theory and Algorithms” on her contributions to the field juxtaposed with the latest developments in this area, was published by Chapman Hall in August, 2007 (the book has been on the computer science best selling list since its publication).
You are welcome for registration at 17.30 hrs, after which you can proceed to take a seat for the dialogue and the discussion at 18.00 hrs. After the dialogue you are invited for a (free) buffet at 19.30 hrs where there is room for further discussion amongst each other. The spoken language is English.
