CineScience: Mad Max Fury Road
Who is in power - and what gives power? Mad Max: Fury Road gives a glimpse into a post-apocalyptic desert world where the ruling power is challenged. This CineScience evening will be introduced by Martijn Witjes, PhD candidate in geoinformatics at WUR and OpenGeoHub. To prevent our world from becoming as impoverished as the landscape in this film, good data is needed. But data is often kept ‘private’ by many major players in Martijn's field, just like water in the film. Those who have a monopoly on water and data also risk having a monopoly on truth. Martijn shows that sharing and combining data can help researchers and policymakers make better decisions. He makes you think about the question of how open we really should be - even if you may surrender a bit of power with that openness.
