CineScience: The River

How can the battles of a farming family in the 80s be linked to the challenges farmers are currently facing in a political landscape? We see innovation all around, but a bitter reality also shows that similar issues are still present. Agricultural economist Petra Berkhout shows that The River has still a very topical story, almost 40 years after the official release. This drama movie, starring Sissy Spacek and Mel Gibson, screens a hard working farming couple who might be able to hold back the river. But could they hold back the greed of man?

The introduction by Petra Berkhout will be provided in Dutch. The movie is English spoken with Dutch subtitles.
