During this activity small groups of people will be assigned to a given parcel of soil in the University Campus and the will receive some tools (forks) to stimulate soil earthworms to emerge from the soil. Different small groups will form teams and the team that will be able to collect more earthworms in small plastic pots will win the earthworms competition.
The earthworms hunt will last approximately 15/20 minutes, after this we will rapidly count the earthworms collected in the different groups and we will announce the winner. After the competition, we will explain in the field the different broad ecological type of soil earthworms with pictures and we will explain their role in soil functions. In addition, we will give information about the ‘bodemdierendagen’, a citizen science project organized by NIOO and WUR, where more soil organisms are recognized in home gardens. In each round, 6 groups of 2/3 people will be able to join and each round will last approximately one hour and 15 minutes.
