Summary

Health optimization strategies aim to achieve or improve health. To monitor their effectiveness, we should be able to quantify health using physiological readouts (biomarkers) that reflect different states of health. The biomarkers that are currently used to measure health can effectively distinguish health from disease but have difficulties in distinguishing different health states. Therefore, biomarkers that can reflect differences in health states are needed. Metabolism is a fundamental process in the human body that can be used for the characterization of human health. This thesis studied the potential of metabolic readouts as biomarkers for human physiological health. These metabolic readouts were measured in individuals with high and low levels of fitness due to the link between fitness level and health outcomes. We identified several metabolic readouts that are promising biomarkers for human physiological health and may be of great relevance for monitoring health optimization strategies in the future.
