About ‘White Riot’

In the late 70s, xenophobia and racism were building in the UK, with artists of great reknown such as Eric Clapton, David Bowie and Rod Steward adopting and expressing racist, far-right rhetoric. This documentary gives a vivid account of the rise of ‘Rock Against Racism’, an anti-racist counter movement that brought new wave, ska, reggae and punk together to join forces against racism, bigotry and the far-right National Front. It shows how vibrant music was able to bring black and white together, musicians and fans alike, culminating in a historic 1978 concert in East London. White Riot conveys the energy of the movement, a sense of hope and rebellion in Rock Against Racism, once described as ‘a way of having a revolution without stopping the party’.
