Summary

Climate and biodiversity conventions inspire visions of sustainable futures but also introduce new ways of governing land and people. This research looks at how measures of forest conservation are used to change or maintain power dynamics. By linking local political agendas to projects and policies of controlling deforestation, agroforestry or forest monitoring, actors turn nature into a battleground for domination and self-determination. The thesis concludes that forest conservation is an actively used to transform the relationships among the state and political collectives. It encourages recognizing and understanding conflicts at various levels to foster a democratic and diverse approach to nature conservation.
