Summary

The research aimed to provide information about factors that could improve the uptake of prevention and control measures against Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) and quantify the farm-level effects of various on-farm HPAI mitigation strategies in the context of different business types of Western Java smallholder broiler farms.

The research provides insights about (1) the priority measures of local governments for HPAI control; (2) farmers’ attitudes and intentions to implement different HPAI mitigation measures; and (3) the quantification of the epidemiological and economic effects of farm-level outbreaks of HPAI and proposed HPAI on-farm mitigation strategies.

Particularly, the research emphasizes various business types of smallholder broiler farms (i.e., independent, price-contract, and makloon-contract farms) and different market circumstances (i.e., the existence of a market for sick birds).
