What is the impact of a community health promotion programme on health and health-supportive environments in a socioeconomically deprived city district? And in what way contributed the action principles: citizens participation and intersectoral collaboration to the yields of the programme?

In a mixed-methods design, a combination of mainly qualitative data from various sources was used to find answers to the research questions and to understand the working of the action principles.

A prominent strategy in this study was participatory action research, which aims to involve all stakeholders, capturing the different perspectives of citizens and professionals and engaging citizens with low socioeconomic status. The research revealed a multidimensional or holistic view on health, and demonstrated how principle-based community health programmes can contribute to reducing health inequalities.
