Blog Beam Trawl Survey: Surprises in the first week

In the first week of the Beam Trawl Survey catches showed plaice (at the right size!) and sole, but also some surprises. The first haul in the Moray Firth, researcher Lorna Teal found a common skate, which she also caught 10 years ago when she was still a student. Later that day the researchers had a second surprise when they discovered a pearlfish in the catch. Pearlfish spend much of their time hiding inside the cavities of holothurians or other echinoderms such as sea urchins or starfish.
