Building resilient seed systems

Seed systems are the starting point for crop selection and subsequently adaptation to climate change. In Uganda, Wageningen University & Research works with market oriented farmer groups that produce and market seed that are demanded in their communities.

75% of the varieties with climate resilient features are home saved or locally bought, including sorghum and finger millet. Therefore farmer groups have started to promote quality seeds for these crops. The project also addresses climate smart seed production and small scale irrigation for vegetable production, and creates awareness on climate resilient varieties and quality seed through campaigns and seed fairs.
