CCAFS-IIRR Internship

The International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR) is a research, educational and community development organization with over 60 years of experience in empowering communities to overcome poverty through people-centered and sustainable development approaches called "rural reconstruction". The IIRR is currently co-implementing a research for development project under the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS). This three-year project, which began in 2019, is targeting the development, demonstration, and promotion of effective scaling strategies of gender-sensitive climate-smart agriculture (CSA) options, tested in climate-smart villages (CSV).

In 2020, the IIRR will focus on the identification of significant outcomes of delivering gender-sensitive CSA approaches in the CCAFS-initiated CSV located in the Philippines. There will be two areas of research: one is an outcome research that aims to identify the effectiveness of the CSA technologies in addressing the CSV-specific climate risks and vulnerabilities; and the other is a gender research that aims to identify and promote policy options that prioritizes gender-sensitive CSA interventions. Both research activities will be implemented in Guinayanagan, Quezon, Philippines. These research studies will be coordinated by the IIRR CSA Team and the IIRR Guinayangan Learning Community, with guidance from subject matter experts. The duration of the study is between six and nine months, which will commence in February 2020.

This internship program is intended for Master of Science students currently enrolled in programs related to the above-mentioned research areas. This will prepare and equip students with relevant experiences in rural development initiatives, climate-smart agriculture and climate-smart villages approaches, outcome analysis and gender research. The intern will participate in the framework and methodology development (may be done remotely), data gathering and literature review, data analysis and report writing. The indicative timeline of activities is as follows (Note: this timeline is still subject to change):
