Evidence suggest that the presence of livestock farms could negatively affect the environmental quality of people living nearby. Wageningen researchers investigated how many livestock farms were located within 250 meters of houses not belonging to the farms. They determined that for 2013, 87% of the farms were located this close to houses; a total of 27.000 farms. They were generally located nearby 5 houses in rural areas and 8 houses in residential areas. This sums up to 222.000 houses in residential areas and 133.000 houses in rural areas. The provinces of Overijssel, Utrecht, Gelderland, Noord-Brabant, and Limburg had peak scores, Flevoland (52%) scored lowest. The scaling up and shutting down of livestock farms seems to result in a downward trend of the number of houses nearby farms.
