Paint from waste

Caproic acid, an important ingredient in the production of paint, is made from palm oil. Researchers at Wageningen University & Research centre are working on a way to replace palm oil as the source.

They discovered that caproic acid can also be made by fermenting supermarket waste, and are currently stabilising that process and making it energy efficient. Utilising waste vegetables, fruit, and meat for paint production is more useful than fermenting it for biogas. This also reduces the pressure on agricultural land and the deforestation of rainforest for oil palm plantations. This is how Wageningen UR contributes to the quality of life.
