Research to enhance sustainability in the Arctic

The Arctic is changing rapidly with sea ice melting at a fast pace. New areas are opening up for economic activities, such as shipping, harbour development, oil and gas extraction, fishing, and tourism. The primary challenge is to develop these activities in such a way that they do not infringe upon the natural environment and local communities.

Wageningen University & Research (WUR) studies the impact of economic activities on the Arctic environment. This varies from pollution caused by plastic or oil to the introduction of new species into the region. Through this research we focus on expanding our knowledge, stimulating innovation, and developing sustainable solutions and policies. These research programmes are vital to enable governmental bodies, industries, and NGOs to take effective measures and minimise threats to the natural system.

This way WUR contributes to enhancing the sustainability of economic activities in the Arctic region.
