Responsible herring bites

The new herring catch (Hollandse nieuwe) came a week later this year, but the North Sea herring are doing well. Researchers at Wageningen UR sail out regularly to monitor the herring populations.

They measure the number of larval, young and adult herring and advise the European fisheries ministers about future, sustainable yields. The researchers have found that 16 percent more fish can be caught in 2016 without harming the population. Thanks to the measurements and recommendations, herring fans can enjoy their bites with peace of mind. This is one of the ways Wageningen UR is working on improving quality of life.

"The acoustic North Sea herring survey provides the most accurate information on the distribution, size and biomass of the entire North Sea herring population. This information forms the basis for advice on sustainable fishing."
