Water management and sustainable livelihoods

In the Mara River Basin, shared by Kenya and Tanzania, people struggle with the impact of unsustainable land use and more erratic rains. Wageningen University & Research works in a consortium on improved water management in agriculture, livestock farming and tourism.

The Wageningen interventions are aimed at business development as a means to create a healthy river basin. With the authorities, communities and companies, value chains are developed for products that put less pressure on fragile ecosystems. Examples are setting up tree nurseries and sustainable beekeeping to protect riparian areas.
