Internship
Internship opportunity: Literature review on contaminants, toxins, and diseases in mussels and crustaceans
Are you an enthusiastic student with a passion for marine ecology, toxicology, and disease ecology? Are you searching for a compelling and relevant topic for your thesis or colloquium? Then this internship could be the perfect opportunity for you!
Research background
Mussel and crustacean populations in the Oosterschelde have been experiencing unexplained mortality events. Potential factors include contaminants, harmful algal toxins, and emerging diseases that may impact their health and survival. However, the exact causes remain unclear. This research aims to compile and analyze existing knowledge on environmental stressors affecting mussels and crustaceans to better understand the risks facing these populations.
What will you do?
As an intern, you will conduct a literature review focusing on:
- Contaminants and toxins affecting mussels and crustaceans in estuarine and marine environments.
- Pathogens and diseases linked to mortality events in these species.
- Potential interactions between environmental stressors and organism health.
- Knowledge gaps and research recommendations for future studies.
Who are we looking for?
- A motivated MSc student in biology, marine science, environmental science, or a related field.
- Fluency in English (Dutch is a plus but not required).
