Malaria control helps wildlife conservation
How to significantly reduce malaria mortality among children and adults living around the Majete Wildlife Reserve in South Malawi, which would also improve wildlife conservation in this malaria-infested area? Wageningen University & Research and the Amsterdam Medical Centre of the University of Amsterdam study the efficacy and socio-economic feasibility of various combinations of anti-malaria techniques: early diagnosis and treatment, mass coverage of insecticide-treated bed nets, house improvement and larval source management. The best combination of techniques will be introduced. The local communities living around the reserve are actively involved, as they will modify houses, treat stagnant water and the like. This enhances the chance of sustainable success, and contributes to better chances for wildlife conservation.
