MSc thesis topic: Spatial quality and Solar Panel Farms

The Netherlands faces considerable challenges while aiming to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with 95% by 2050. Solar energy will play an important role in the energy mix, entailing both the installation of photovoltaic panels on roofs and the development of solar parks. Both applications are needed to reach the National Climate Agreement.

Solar parks increase land-use pressure and affect landscape experience; they change the quality of the environment and raise concerns by inhabitants and policy makers. The current practice of solar park development lacks tools to adequately address those societal concerns and include innovative solar technologies in the discussion.

In this thesis we aim to develop a (3D) geodata application (AR/VR) that may support stakeholders and decision makers to assess the landscape quality in relation to solar parks.

The thesis will be supervised by the Laboratory of Geo-information Science and Remote Sensing and Landscape Architecture, and will support a PhD study.
