The Magic of Peer Coaching

Six new peer coaches have recently joined Student Training & Support. One of them - Jingwen - reported back enthusiastically after her first session. 'I experienced the Magic of Peer Coaching'. We met up with her to hear more about that.

Peer Coach Jinwen - 2024

Before starting to coach students, the new team receive a four-session training from the Peer Coach Coordinator and a Student Psychologist. They learn about the basics of solution-focused coaching, giving workshops and working behind the information desk. They also attend one or more meetings with an experienced peer coach. Jingwen, one of the new peer coaches, reported after one such session: "I discovered the magic of peer coaching".

What do you think of Wageningen so far?

"I started studying Food Technology in August 2023. I really like the relaxed vibe here. Students in Wageningen don't feel as pressured by their families or society. In the Netherlands, you have a lot of freedom, and people don't judge you as much. For instance, you can get a tattoo or dye your hair any color you like."

Why did you want to become a Peer Coach?

I wanted to get the most out of my time in Wageningen; to contribute and be useful. The training and experience as a peer coach fit well with my interests and goals. I like working and communicating with people; this also allows me to meet more people in Wageningen.

What is the Magic of Peer Coaching to you?

It's amazing to see how people can find their own solutions when you encourage them. Instead of telling them what to do, we ask questions that help them think about their problems and how to solve them. It works really well.

As an international student from China, I understand the challenges that other international students face. For example, in group work, Dutch students often speak up easily, but international students might find it harder. I want to help them feel more confident, believe in their ideas and express them easier in the group.

Good luck team Peer Coach!

We wish Jingwen and her colleagues lots of success and hope they will find joy and fulfilment in their work.

P.S. Did you know our peer coaches are at the FORUM Infodesk every day from noon to 2 PM? They're there to answer your questions about student support or point you in the right direction.
