Timely detection of new viruses

Arbovirus outbreaks are widespread, but unpredictable and unexplained. The current surveillance approaches focusing on individual diseases are thus inefficient. In collaboration with various research groups, Wageningen researchers work on maximizing early detection of arbovirus outbreaks. They do so by identifying ecological hotspots for the emergence of six arboviruses. The project develops a science based sampling protocol, including a ready-to-use multiplex surveillance test that detects exposure to multiple viruses. By targeting three mosquito-borne and three tick-borne viruses that are considered top priority emerging zoonotic arboviruses in the Netherlands, the project provides a state-of-the-art early warning system.
