The sports grant from the Niels Smith Fund was awarded this year to two WUR students: handball player Esma Staal (20) and heptathlon athlete Sofie Dokter (19). The grant, of 1500 euros each, helps them to combine their passion for sports with their studies.

Handball player Esma Staal (20) plays in the premier league at VZV in the village 't Veld in the province of North Holland. She also competes in European competitions with her team. Moreover, Staal is part of Jong Oranje, the junior national team (under twenty years old). Sofie Dokter (19), from Groningen, won gold this year at the Dutch heptathlon championship and competed at the European championship this summer, where she finished 13th. Both athletes are getting better and better in their sports discipline and we hope to give them a helping hand to the top with this grant.
