Why the Nico Buisman Fund?

Wageningen University environmental technologists belong to the world’s cream of the crop in this field. This fact deserves more recognition and attention at Wageningen. Also, it will encourage more students to follow the study and will result in more money for dissertation opportunities. The main goal of the Nico Buisman Fund is to encourage education and research in environmental technology.

Professor Dr. Cees J.N. Buisman created the Nico Buisman Fund in 2004. It extends scholarships to Wageningen University environmental technology students.

Wageningen University environmental technologists are the cream of the crop in this field and founder of the Nico Buisman Fund, Professor Dr. Cees J.N. Buisman, feels that this fact deserves more recognition and attention at Wageningen itself. It is his way to actively support Wageningen UR.

Cees Buisman is professor biological recycling technology at Wageningen University. He explains, “The fund is a call for attention especially at Wageningen University itself because outside its parameters, we are well known.”  Biological technologies are the theme of his career ever since his study in water purification at Wageningen and his promotion in 1989. “My father, Nico Buisman, encouraged me enthusiastically during my studies and, unfortunately, died just before my promotion. I named the fund after him.”

Buisman hopes that the fund will set people thinking about environmental technology at Wageningen. “Many people at Wageningen do not realise that Shell, for instance, utilises a Wageningen technology in many countries to desulphurise refinery gas. And without anaerobic water purification technology, many industries would not be able to exist. The success of biological techniques lies in the fact that they function well and are cheap to use.”
