Vanilla from the Dutch Greenhouse: Nethervanilla
Vanilla is one of the world’s most expensive spices. As the price, quality and supply of this tropical natural product fluctuate considerably, however, this aroma is often imitated. Wageningen researchers are working with the business community on the cultivation of the vanilla orchid in greenhouses. Such controlled cultivation in greenhouses allows the horticulturalist to produce quality vanilla and to regulate the vanillin content. This also means ‘nethervanilla’ could help in the development of a drug against the yeast infection candida.
Most people have positive associations with vanilla. This is why working on the sustainable cultivation and processing of vanilla with a group of enthusiastic horticulturalists, buyers and researchers generates a lot of energy and enjoyment.
