Student Financial Support (FOS)

If you encounter a study delay through force majeure, for example because of illness or family matters, the university can decide to compensate you financially. This regulation is called the Financial Student Support (FOS).

Circumstances beyond one's control

For this part of regulations, special circumstances are defined as:

Force majeure? If you are uncertain whether a case qualifies as force majeure, report it to Studentdean@wur.nl regardless. A counsellor will evaluate whether you meet the requirements.

Recognised board positions

Board members of recognised student organisations may receive a board grant as financial compensation for potential study delays caused by their board work. Each recognised student organisation is allocated a fixed number of board months, which they distribute among their board members.

Would you like more information on applying for a board grant, or are you looking to apply for recognition as an organisation? Check out the info here.

Top-level Sports

NOC-NSF

  1. The student, who wants to qualify for FOS-recognition, must contact the head of the University Sports Centre at WU.
  2. Following the criteria formulated by the NOC/NSF, the head of the University Sports Centre will submit a recommendation to the Student Dean's Office whether the student qualifies for this regulation.
  3. On behalf of the Executive Board, the Student Dean’s Office will decide within a reasonable term of no longer than 8 weeks. The student will be notified of the decision by e-mail or by letter.

For all the rules and regulations check: Profiling Fund 2024-2025.

To qualify for FOS, the following requirements apply:

  1. You have to report the delay to a student dean or psychologist within two months.
  2. At the time of the delay, you received a performance grant or WUR-financing (social master)
  3. The delay is at least a month (6 ECTS)
  4. You were unable to prevent the delay in any way (force majeure)
  5. You are unable to make up for the delay within the academic year.

After reporting the delay, a student dean will invite you for a consult. He/she will check whether you meet all the requirements. The student dean will also discuss with you whether provisions are needed to, as much as possible, prevent further delay. If you are unable to study for a longer period, you will be advised about temporarily unsubscribing.

Payment of the financial support

The application for payment of the financial support has to be submitted before 31 August of the academic year following the academic year in which the study delay was determined by the student dean. If the application is not submitted in time, it will not be processed.

  1. The application must be submitted to SSC using the appropriate FOS form.
  2. The Student Dean's Office will make a decision about the application on behalf of the Executive Board, within a reasonable term of no longer than 8 weeks. The student will be notified of the decision by e-mail or by letter.
  3. After the support has been approved, the full amount will be paid as soon as possible.

4. The financial support is provided as a gift.

Appeal

An appeal to a decision made based on these regulations can be made within six weeks after receipt of the decision. The appeal should be addressed to the Executive Board and can be submitted to the Student Legal Protection Desk (legalprotection.students@wur.nl).

The procedure is described in the Student Charter.
