How to analyse a vacancy
When exploring job vacancies, it’s important to know how to analyse one to determine whether the job is a good fit for you, and to help you write your motivation letter. Use this checklist to guide you!
Read the job title carefully
- The title gives an indication of the role, seniority, and industry.
- Look for keywords like “junior,” “senior,” “specialist,” or “coordinator” to understand the level.
Understand the job description
- Identify the main tasks and responsibilities.
- Do they align with your skills and interests?
- Does this role match with what you’re looking for?
- Will you be working in a team? If so, how big is the team?
Research the organisation
- What's the organisation’s mission, vision, and values?
- Do they align with your career goals?
- What kind of organisation is it? (Young/established, Dutch/international)
- What products/services does it provide?
- How many employees does it have?
- What is the working atmosphere like? (Informal, young, dynamic?)
Check the qualifications
- What education and experience are required?
- What personal qualities are they looking for?
- Are there any other specific skills or preferences?
- The first few requirements listed are usually the most important.
- If you meet most of the requirements, apply anyway! You can learn on the job.
Look for keywords
- Identify key skills and phrases in the vacancy and include them in your CV and motivation letter.
- Be aware that some of the larger companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to filter applications based on these keywords.
Understand the salary & benefits (if mentioned)
- Look for details on salary, bonuses, collective labour agreement, flexible work options, and career development opportunities.
Check the location & work arrangements
- Is the job on-site, remote, or hybrid?
- Consider the commute, work-life balance, and visa/work permit requirements (if applicable).
Pay attention to the application instructions
- Follow the employer’s guidelines carefully (e.g., required documents, format, deadlines).
